Easy One Pot Spaghetti Recipe

One pot pasta recipes are perfect for a quick dinner on busy weeknights because they're quick, easy, kid friendly, and you only have one pan to wash, so fewer dishes to do. I love one pot meals!

Once you see how easy it is to cook spaghetti directly in the sauce, you'll never want to cook it any other way! You cook the spaghetti in the sauce, not boiling water.

I came up with this one-pot spaghetti recipe after a few of you wrote in asking for a stove top version of my Instant Pot Spaghetti and Meat Sauce.

Spaghetti snobs (I used to be one) may disagree, but believe me, this one-pot meal is a great recipe that saves you a few steps, and it works! And sometimes, we just need easy comfort food. All you need to make this easy spaghetti dinner is a large pot or large Dutch oven -- and a stove!

Serve spaghetti and meat sauce with a green salad and crusty bread or garlic bread, for a complete meal in minutes!

Dutch Oven Spaghetti Ingredients

You only need a few simple ingredients for this Dutch oven spaghetti recipe. You can find them in your grocery store:

  • Yellow onion-- or white onion, chopped
  • Olive oil -- to cook the onion
  • Lean ground beef -- no draining needed!
  • Spaghetti -- 16 ounces. Break spaghetti noodles in half so they cook evenly
  • Spaghetti sauce -- I love Rao's marinara sauce, but any brand works
  • Diced tomatoes -- adds texture and additional liquid without watering down the sauce
  • Water or beef broth -- to help cook the pasta
  • Seasonings -- Italian seasoning, sea salt, garlic powder, ground black pepper and optional red pepper flakes

How to Make One Pot Spaghetti with Meat Sauce

First, you cook the onions in some olive oil over medium heat until they're slightly soft, and then, you brown your ground beef.

There's no need to cook the ground meat all the way because it will finish cooking with the pasta.

If there's a lot of grease, you can drain it. I use lean ground beef, so I usually skip this step. Next, season the meat, and you're ready for the pasta.

You'll need to break the uncooked spaghetti in half so that it cooks evenly and doesn't clump together.

Then, add your uncooked spaghetti to the pot, and pour in spaghetti sauce, diced tomatoes and water. Cook over medium-high heat until sauce starts to boil. Then, reduce heat to medium while the pasta cooks.

If you want even more flavor for your spaghetti, you can use beef broth or chicken broth instead of water. Or, you can add a little red wine to really take this spaghetti dinner to the next level!

You do need to keep an eye on the pasta and stir frequently so that the spaghetti doesn't clump together or stick to the bottom of the pot.

Cook Time

Cook pasta until al dente, which is about 12 to 15 minutes. Total cooking time for this recipe is about 30 minutes, including time to cook the ground meat.

As soon as the pasta is cooked al dente or to your liking, you're done!

I like to sprinkle a little grated Parmesan cheese and chopped parsley over the top before serving. Doesn't this look gorgeous?!

I use kitchen tongs to lift the spaghetti out of the pot directly to people's plates. Honestly, you guys, this one pot spaghetti is a lifesaver on busy days!

My kids absolutely love this flavorful spaghetti with meat sauce. It has amazing flavor, and it works so well for feeding them before they head off to football or soccer or dance. This is also a great Dutch oven recipe for camping!

How to Store and Reheat Leftovers

Store leftover spaghetti in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It should last for 3 to 4 days. Reheat cold spaghetti in the microwave or on the stove until hot and steaming. You may need to add a little more pasta sauce when reheating.

The leftovers heat up well, and you can freeze larger amounts for later. Just place pasta in freezer safe containers or zip top bags, and use within 3 months for best taste.

Substitutions and Variations

Use Italian sausage in place of ground beef or use half sausage half beef. You can use your favorite pasta shape in place of spaghetti noodles. Gluten free pasta works here.

Use homemade sauce (try my homemade spaghetti sauce)or your favorite brand of jar sauce and your favorite spices. Fresh herbs like basil add wonderful flavor. You can also add more marinara sauce or tomato sauce and omit the diced tomatoes.

Sub ½ cup red wine for ½ cup water or broth for extra flavor. Add fresh veggies like fresh spinach, bell pepper, kale, zucchini or broccoli. This is a great way to sneak more veggies into your kids' meals.

For a low fat option, use ground turkey. You can also leave the meat out for vegetarian pasta.

Recipe Tips

Note -- This spaghetti recipe calls for 16 ounces of spaghetti -- a regular package, as opposed to 8 ounces. It makes a lot of pasta, but it's perfect for leftovers, and it freezes well for later -- easy meal prep!

Break spaghetti noodles in half so they don't clump together. Also, stir the pasta frequently as it cooks.

This recipe works best with 24-26 oz jar of spaghetti sauce. If you are using a larger jar of sauce, you may want to skip the can of tomatoes.

FAQs

What is the ratio of alfredo sauce to pasta? ›

When calculating how much sauce for pasta per person, generally about 2 to 4 ounces (1/4 to 1/2 cup) of sauce for each 2 ounce (about 1 cup cooked) serving of pasta would be needed.

How much pasta sauce for 1 pound of meat? ›

You can use as much meat as you want, really - but anywhere from 1-2 pounds per large jar of sauce should work out best. I tend to use 1 pound of meat nearly every time.

Can you put uncooked spaghetti in sauce to cook? ›

By skipping the separate boiling of the pasta and instead adding the dried noodles straight to the sauce, you can make a weeknight-friendly meal in just one pot. Bonus: It makes the pasta more flavorful, too.

What thickens Alfredo sauce? ›

Add Cheese

The key ingredient in Alfredo sauce is cheese—generally Parmigiano Reggiano—and lots of it. To thicken Alfredo sauce, simply add more cheese than the amount called for in a recipe until you achieve the consistency you want.

What can I add to Alfredo sauce to make it better? ›

Flavor Boosters

Nutmeg: A pinch of freshly grated nutmeg can elevate the flavors in your Alfredo sauce. However, use it sparingly; a little goes a long way. White Wine: A splash of a good-quality white wine can add depth and complexity. Make sure to cook off the alcohol by simmering the sauce for a few extra minutes.

What can I add to spaghetti sauce to make it taste better? ›

Tossing in strips of basil, a sprig of thyme or some oregano can take your sauce to the next level. Although fresh herbs might pop a bit more, dried herbs and spices can work just as well. Sprinkling in some red pepper flakes, a pinch of parsley and a dash of salt and pepper can liven up your jarred pasta sauce.

Do you drain meat before adding spaghetti sauce? ›

You don't have to, it's more of a preference. If you don't your sauce will have more grease in it. If you drain it, then it won't. I don't bother draining for things like sauces, but when I make ground beef taco meat I drain it because otherwise the tacos are too drippy and greasy.

Do you cook homemade spaghetti sauce covered or uncovered? ›

If you want to reduce a sauce or liquid keep pot uncovered so that the excess water can evaporate. If you want the moisture to be absorbed e.g. when cooking rice keep the lid on. Slow cooking a casserole or braised dish cover the pot so that the vapour circulates and keeps the meat moist.

Is it better to simmer spaghetti sauce with lid on or off? ›

If you want to get the flavours to combine and the tomatoes to soften and get the saucy texture its best to cover the pot snd simmer on low heat. Stir occasionally to check if its sticking and do taste from time to time. If you want to reduce the sauce, evaporate excess water , you should leave the pot uncovered.

When making spaghetti do you drain the water? ›

Quickly and loosely drain the pasta into a colander in the sink. Noodles should still be wet. Do not rinse the pasta, though. The starch in the water is what helps the sauce adhere to your pasta.

How do you get meat sauce to stick to pasta? ›

Pasta water is key

Kenji López-Alt says if you are going to allow your pasta to finish cooking in your pasta sauce, you'll want to thin the sauce with some pasta water. Pasta water is the real key to getting your sauce to stick to your pasta.

How do you thicken pasta and sauce? ›

Cornstarch: Make a slurry of half water, half cornstarch and whisk until smooth. Cornstarch is a powerful thickener, so start by whisking in no more than 1 tablespoon of the mixture per 2 cups of simmering sauce; stir and simmer for 2 minutes, check the thickness, and repeat with more slurry as needed.

How to cook pasta with jar sauce? ›

Simply pour the sauce into a small saucepan while you're going about boiling your pasta. Let it come to a boil, then reduce the heat so that the sauce gently bubbles. Keep the simmer going for about 10 minutes or so, until you've noticed that the sauce has reduced and thickened a little, but is still saucy.

How much sauce to use for pasta? ›

For tomato-based sauces, a good rule of thumb to follow is to use one jar of 24-ounce pasta sauce for every 16-ounce package of pasta. When calculating how much sauce for pasta per person, generally about 2 to 4 ounces (1/4 to 1/2 cup) of sauce for each 2 ounce (about 1 cup cooked) serving of pasta would be needed.

What is the ratio of liquid to pasta? ›

Use about 4 quarts of water for every 1 pound of pasta. In general, the more pasta you are cooking, the more water you should use to prevent the pasta from clumping up too much in the pot. Should you use cold or hot water to start? When adding the water to the pot, be sure to start with cold water.

What is the ratio formula for pasta? ›

The Ratio. And the key ratio here is 1:2. For every 4 ounces of pasta, you want 8 ounces of liquid. Four ounces will make a good portion for one person, so if you have a family of four, you will want 1 pound of pasta and 32 ounces of liquid.

How much pasta water to add to sauce? ›

The water your pasta cooked in can be a great addition to a sauce. It's salty and, most importantly, full of starch, which helps bind and thicken a sauce. Take a ladle of the water—a quarter cup or so—and set it aside before draining your pasta, then add that water to your sauce.
