What You’ll Need To Make Lettuce Wraps
Let’s take a look at the ingredients you’ll need to make your own lettuce wraps! See bottom of post for full instructions in recipe card.
- extra virgin olive oil– You’ll use the olive oil to saute the onion and garlic.
- onion– White onions chopped finely works great.
- garlic– Use a fresh clove of garlic and mince yourself or grab the little jar of minced garlic available in the produce section.
- ground turkey breast– Ground turkey breast is delicious in the recipe. You can absolutely substitute to chicken or even beef if you’d like.
- kosher salt– This coarse salt is commonly used in cooking and baking. I prefer it over table salt.
- freshly ground black pepper– For best tasting results use freshly cracked black pepper.
- garlic salt– Look for Lawry’s garlic salt. It’s a good one.
- broccoli slaw-Check for the broccoli slaw near the bagged broccoli and other vegetables in the produce area.
- water chestnuts- Totally optional, but they add a nice added crunch.
- Teriyaki Sauce– Check for Yoshida’s Teriyaki sauce. It’s what I’ve used for years.
- lettuce leaves– I like to use Butter Lettuce leaves, Iceburg works great too.
How To Make Turkey Lettuce Wraps
- Cook Ground Turkey. Place oil into a large 5 qt skillet or other large pan over medium heat. When hot, add onion and garlic. Cook for 5 minutes to soften. Add ground turkey, salt, pepper and garlic salt. Brown and crumble until cooked through. Stir in red pepper flakes for a little spice. Can be optional.
- Add Vegetables and Sauce. When turkey is cooked, stir in broccoli slaw, water chestnuts (optional), and teriyaki sauce. Cook for another 10-15 minutes or until heated through. Reduce heat to low until ready to serve. Serve spoonfuls inside lettuce leaves. Enjoy!
Recipe Tips For Success
- Pre-chop your veggies to speed up dinner prep.
- Make sure your ground turkey is thawed ahead of time before dinner.
- Ground turkey is a very lean meat, make sure you have enough oil in the pan when browning.
- If you can’t find broccoli slaw at your grocery store, check for a bag of stir fry vegetables. They might need a coarse chop before adding to the turkey, but that could be a good substitution.
- If you want a little more spice, add double the red pepper flakes. You can also top your lettuce wraps with Sriracha too.
- There are many Teriyaki sauces available at the grocery store. If you can’t find the Mr. Yoshida’s that I use, choose another variety. Should be just fine. Trader Joe’s has a nice Teriyaki sauce too. Note, a little Teriyaki sauce goes a long way.
What’s The Best Lettuce To Use For Lettuce Wraps Recipe?
- There are a number of lettuce options you can use for your lettuce wraps. I used Butter Lettuce which is beautiful and has very tender leaves.
- Iceburg lettuce works great too. It’s a little bit more crunchy than butter lettuce leaves.
- My third choice would be romaine leaves if needed. A bit trickier to wrap and they’re larger, but can be used.
How To Serve Lettuce Wraps
Serve lettuce wraps with the turkey filling hot inside chilled lettuce leaves. Spoon a little more teriyaki sauce over each lettuce wrap if desired. I enjoy my lettuce wraps with a little bit of sriracha sauce too.
How To Store Leftovers
Store any leftover lettuce wrap filling in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Store extra lettuce leaves in a large ziplock bag for a couple days in the refrigerator. Reheat filling as needed in the microwave. Use a heat proof bowl, covered for 60 second intervals.
